Australia's former foreign minister (and Prime Minister before that) may find it a surprise that I endorse his thoughtful views. I was a Jesuit and a priest for 15 years before going to work in Canberra for a foreign minister of a different political persuasion. This essay is a growing series of contributions that trace a remarkable evolution of views on his part and an increasingly valuable addition to understanding foreign policy in this 'dangerous' world we live in. Kevin Rudd's contribution is also seeing the value of faith as an integral part of the western tradition. He wrote an article on Dietrich Bonhoeffer in an October 2006 essay in a magazine the Monthly that I read and come back to still. This was written while he was the Opposition Leader.

Curiously enough we both headed off to do DPhils at Oxford (mine is in ethics) at the same time (both later in life). I basked in the comments of other DPhil students who asked were all Australian Prime Minister inclined to the humble task of interrogating deeply key issues - in his case the Chinese leader. Yet again in this essay Kevin opens up the integral connections of faith, human rights, the enlightenment and a hard nosed view of international affairs. Someone one day will write a DPhil about him.

Politicians should be judged as much by what they achieved after leaving politics as to what they did during their terms. Kevin Rudd is way up there. I could not recommend this article more strongly to those interested in leading in these dangerous times who like Kevin and FDR and all of us who hate war.

Keep the articles coming Kevin Rudd DPhil. Your best years may be ahead of you!

Thank you for a fantastic read! It's such a thoughtful and informative piece that I'll read it a few more times I think.
